BITUMEN Types Used For Road Construction
The surface course, base course, and sub base course are the three main tiers. Tack coat, binder course, and prime coat are the sub layers that are positioned between the major layers to bind them together. To shield the surface course from harm, protective Bitumen are also utilized.
For building roads in a variety of environments, penetration grade bitumen is exceptional. The hardness and consistency of these bitumen grades are what give them their names, and they fall into a spectrum of grades from 30 to 120.
Determining bitumen's viability for usage with different building techniques and in various climates is the major objective of grading bitumen based on penetration.
Bitumen is a substance with a variety of qualities. Bitumen tests are used to choose the best bitumen for use in road construction and other sectors. Before utilizing it, during application, and after aging, bitumen tests enable us to ascertain its characteristics and assess its quality. Bitumen can also be categorized by its physical characteristics.
Bitumen is a complicated substance without a clear melting point. The bitumen gradually softens and loses viscosity as the temperature rises; therefore the softening point is established. What is the bitumen's softening point? The temperature at which bitumen softens past a certain softness is known as the softening point of bitumen. The softening point test will reveal it.
Viscosity Grade Bitumen in four different grades (VG10, VG20, VG30, and VG40), has been superseded by bitumen penetration grade in accordance with Indian Standard (IS:73). Because of its benefits and characteristics, this type of bitumen is more dependable than others. IS 73, ASTM, and AASHTO all determine the viscosity grade of bitumen. The IS states that in 2006, the classification of bitumen changed from penetration grade to viscosity grade.
Vapor is produced close to the surface of flammable or combustible material during heating. The flash point test determines the lowest temperature at which the vapor ignites and produces an immediate flame when present with an ignition source. The temperature higher than the flash point is measured using the fire point test. The flame burned for over five seconds at the fire spot.
A specific gravity test determines how much bitumen weighs in relation to the same amount of water. The Pycnometer method and the Balance method can both be used to determine the specific gravity of bitumen. Pure bitumen has a specific gravity in the range of 0.97 to 1.02. Tar has a specific gravity of about 1.20.
The bitumen packaging is divided into three categories: bulk, jumbo bags, and new steel drums. The optimum type of packaging is selected based on the customer's requirements, bitumen volume, and bitumen weight. We cordially encourage you to watch our in-depth video about bitumen packages and read this article to learn more about these packages.
Based on the current geopolitical landscape and recent policy announcements, the US sanctions framework significantly impacts global commodity sales in 2025:
The US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has intensified restrictions on Russia's energy sector, specifically targeting major oil producers and the affiliated maritime logistics networks to suppress commodity revenue streams.
Compliance risk for commodity traders remains elevated due to the increased scrutiny of the shadow fleet and the potential for secondary sanctions on international actors facilitating the illicit transport of sanctioned crude oil and petroleum products.
Incoterms 2020 defines the essential responsibilities, costs, and risks for buyers and sellers in the international and domestic delivery of goods, standardizing commercial contract clauses globally. These rules, published by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), ensure clarity in critical activities like export clearance, carriage obligations, and the precise point of risk transfer between the two parties. A fundamental change in Incoterms 2020 was the clarification of appropriate levels of insurance coverage for the CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight) and CIP (Carriage and Insurance Paid To) rules, mitigating financial exposure for the cargo owner during transit. A significant structural update in Incoterms 2020 was the renaming of DAT (Delivered at Terminal) to DPU (Delivered at Place Unloaded), providing flexibility for the delivery point to be any agreed-upon location, not strictly a terminal.
